Former FC Barcelona and Liverpool no. 9 Luis Suarez has signed a contract with Inter Miami, keeping him at the club for another year.
The 38-year-old played a major role in Miami last season as the MLS giants clinched the Eastern Conference and the MLS Cup.
Suarez bagged 17 goals and 17 assists in 50 appearances for Javier Mascherano’s side, also helping make history by becoming the first American team to reach the knockout stage of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Fans are relieved that Lionel Messi will be able to play with his ‘partner in crime’ for another season, especially after Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets announced their retirement after winning the MLS Cup.
As per reports, the club wanted Suárez to stay for another season, but the player hadn't made up his mind until the first week of December. The Uruguayan international is the second-highest top scorer for the club after Lionel Messi, having made just 87 appearances.
"Luis deserves to be able to make that decision to be able to leave through the front door and be celebrated like he should be by the club. And if he decides to stay at the club for another year, it would be great. I would like to see Suarez stay,” said Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas. (sic)
He further added, "Obviously, then the conversations would be about how Luis Suarez would stay, but obviously, we would include [head coach Mascherano and Luis, but the decision is up to him." (sic)
Suarez, who turns 39 years old soon, is expected to play a limited role from the bench and mentor the youth players to potentially find his successor at the club.
